My Environmentalism Will Be Intersectional Or It Will be Bullshit

April 8, 2013

A popular feminist refrain that is slowly embedding itself in our ideas about environmental issues.

Today was day 1 of the National Institute for Energy Ethics and Society (NIEES) workshop. I have to finish an essay for my cybersecurity class, so I won’t dwell on anything right now. However, a couple highlights:

Energy Systems as Socio-technological Systems (Clark Miller)

  • Does urbanism make things better? How do we organize our lives around technology? (ex. transportation systems)
  • Energy Systems
  • What are the implications of an “all of the above” energy strategy?
  • Policies can have unanticipated negative outcomes from an ethical standpoint. For example, subsidies from utilities for solar panels serve to redistribute wealth from the poor to the rick. This can happen because of ideological hazards, ex. a focus on market-based solutions.
  • It’s going to be hard to get to zero-carbon so we should get more than just that.
  • We need to anticipate new economies, ex. a post-oil economy will be bad for the Gulf Coast unless we plan ahead
