Computer Engineer Barbie

June 17, 2011

I think it would have been way cooler to introduce Computer Engineer Barbie in the context of women in computing.

Did you know that the original computer programers were women? Until the dudes realized that it actually requires intelligence – then “girls” weren’t allowed to do it anymore.

I think connecting to that legacy would be really compelling for encouraging women and girls to pursue STEM fields. Then we could refute all of this silliness about women being bad at STEM.

What I think is hilarious is that women are supposedly born with this innate preference for language, and their brains are supposedly *made* to handle and process language more efficiently, but that this gift somehow doesn’t extend into computer languages. It ends exactly where Geek culture begins. Funny how that works.

For years, language and art were considered incredibly masculine activities (back when it was still believed that women didn’t actually have souls like men did). The Renaissance men were great at these things, but at some point after the Industrial revolution they became “soft” and “feminine”…

I’m sick of “smart” hobbies and professions being coopted by dominant male culture. I’m sick of being fed contradictory statements about what I’m innately good at. Loving your blog…
