Psychological Traps

June 11, 2011

Women (and minorities) in engineering have to look out for lots of psychological traps that cause them to not live up to their potential.

Stereotype Threat – the tendency for individuals to affirm a stereotype based on their personal characteristics when that stereotype is highlighted in the context of an activity.

Internalized Sexism – the tendency for women to discriminate against other more-feminine women.

Imposter Syndrome – the inability to internalize success and the tendency to discredit success as a result of luck, chance, perseverance, or personality.

Glass Ceiling – the invisible barrier that prevents the success of high-achieving women in the workplace.

Knowledge is power!
