Waiting for the Locks

October 23, 2010

About a week ago, the Ballard Large Locks were struck by lightening.

It was the night before the ship was supposed to come back to UW. The following morning, we were standing at the UW dock wondering where the boat was before we got a call that the locks were closed and the ship had turned around to head for Pier 91. At that point, they thought the locks would be fixed in a day.

Unfortunately, as they delved deeper into the problem, it became quite clear that a large portion of the lock’s electronics had been completely fried. Besides that, the locks are so old that a lot of the components are no longer manufactured and have to be specially machined. So then, it was a week.

Now the locks are operating in manual mode a couple times a day so you have to make an appointment to go through. Ours was at 0900 … but that was 40min ago and I’m not sure what the hold up is. Perhaps I should go investigate …
